Job Description

Job Summary:

The Manufacturing Fixture Design Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and implementing fixtures, tooling, and automation equipment to support efficient and scalable production of Inogen products. This role focuses on creating robust, cost-effective, and reliable solutions using CAD for new product introductions and continuous improvement of existing manufacturing processes. The engineer will collaborate with cross-functional teams to validate designs, standardize equipment, and optimize production workflows.

Responsibilities (Specific tasks, duties, essential functions of the job)

Manufacturing Fixture Design Engineer I

  • Design, document, fabricate, validate, and maintain fixtures, tooling, and automation equipment for Inogen manufacturing operations.
  • Utilize SolidWorks to create CAD models of custom fixtures, tooling, and automation equipment
  • Prioritize work to meet project deadlines.
  • Concurrently develop manufacturing fixtures, tooling, and processes as part of the product development cycle for new product introductions (NPI).
  • Perform equipment and process validations, including Installation Qualifications (IQ), Operational Qualifications (OQ), and Performance Qualifications (PQ).
  • Plan and execute line expansions and duplications across Inogen manufacturing sites as necessary to meet volume requirements.
  • Maintain comprehensive and accurate inventories of fixtures, tooling, and equipment used in production.
  • Keep detailed equipment and part expenditure records to ensure project budgets can accurately be tracked.
  • Ensure lab space allocated to projects is well organized and properly equipped.
  • Document equipment designs, including Bills of Materials (BOMs), standard operating procedures, and calibration/maintenance schedules.
  • Standardize fixtures and equipment to meet safety, quality, and regulatory standards.
  • Train operators and manufacturing personnel on the use of fixtures and equipment.
  • Maintain availability for immediate response to production line issues.
  • Identify and implement fixture and equipment improvements to increase production efficiency and reduce costs.
  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance.
  • Comply with all company policies and procedures.
  • Assist with any other duties as assigned.

Manufacturing Fixture Design Engineer II

In addition to items listed for Manufacturing Fixture Design Engineer I, a Manufacturing Fixture Design Engineer II may also be responsible for the following:

  • Lead fixture, tooling, and automation equipment design projects to enhance production efficiency and meet manufacturing goals.
  • Demonstrate expertise in mechanical design, including pneumatic and electromechanical systems for fixtures and automation equipment.

Manufacturing Fixture Design Engineer III

In addition to items listed for Manufacturing Fixture Design Engineer II, a Manufacturing Fixture Design Engineer III may also be responsible for the following:

  • Independently design, prototype, test, and implement complex fixtures, tooling, and automation equipment.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally across engineering disciplines to drive projects to completion, integrating machine-to-machine communication and data collection systems.
  • Lead high-complexity projects involving automation, robotics, or advanced manufacturing systems..

Qualifications (Experience and Education)

Level I

Manufacturing Fixture Design Engineer I

  • Bachelor’s in Mechanical, Industrial, or related Engineering or Scientific field required.
  • 1+ year of fixture, tooling, or equipment design experience using CAD (SolidWorks preferred).
  • Medical device manufacturing experience (ISO 13485, FDA regulations), preferred.
  • A combination of training, education and experience that is equivalent to the qualifications listed above and that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Level II

Manufacturing Fixture Design Engineer II

  • Bachelor’s in Mechanical, Industrial, or related Engineering or Scientific field required.
  • 3+ years of designing fixtures, tooling, or automation equipment using CAD (SolidWorks required).
  • 2+ years of medical device manufacturing experience (ISO 13485, FDA regulations), preferred.
  • A combination of training, education and experience that is equivalent to the qualifications listed above and that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Level III

Manufacturing Fixture Design Engineer III

  • Bachelor’s in Mechanical, Industrial, or related Engineering or Scientific field required.
  • Master’s in Mechanical, Electrical, Biomedical, Industrial, or related Engineering or Scientific field, preferred.
  • 6+ years of designing fixtures, tooling, or automation equipment, with expertise in SolidWorks.
  • 3+ years of medical device manufacturing experience (ISO 13485, FDA regulations), preferred.
  • A combination of training, education and experience that is equivalent to the qualifications listed above and that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
